PRESBYTERIANSIM is a family of Christian denominations which is most prevalent within the Reformed branch of Protestant Western Christianity.

Presbyterianism grew out of the reformation Movement of the 16^th century in Europe and takes its name from the Greek word presbuteros. The Presbyterian heritage, and much of what they believe, began with John Calvin (1509-1564), whose writings crystallized much of the Reformed thinking that came before him.

The Presbyterian name reflects the form of government that follows representative rule by the congregation guided by the Holy Spirit and the authority of the scripture. Presbyterian theology typically emphasizes the sovereignty of God, a high regard for the authority of the Bible, and an emphasis on the necessity of grace through faith in Christ. Although some Presbyterians today still hold to the theology of Calvin and his immediate successors, there is a wide range of theological views within contemporary Presbyterianism.

The Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), with denominational offices in Louisville, Kentucky, has approximately 2.3 million members in all of the 50 United States and Puerto Rico, include more than 10,000 congregations and 14,000 ordained and active ministers.

As a part of their religion, Presbyterians use service to the community, worship, education, and fellowship to proclaim the good news of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
